Sisterhood Walking Japantown Tour

Sunday, November 14, 2021 10 Kislev 5782

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Join Sisterhood for a Walking Tour of San Jose’s Japantown on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 10:00 a.m.  The tour will take approximately 1 ½ hours.  We will meet in front of the Japanese American Museum, 535 N. Fifth St., (half a block down from the corner of Jackson & Fifth). There is a small parking lot on the side of the museum that we are welcome to use. Our docent will be Vernon Hayashida.  Cost is $8.00 General Admission and $5.00 for Seniors (65+). Sisterhood will collect cash, checks or credit cards on the day of the walk.

Here is just a taste of what you will learn about on our tour:

San Jose's Japantown (Nihonmachi) developed from where the immigrant Japanese first settled in Santa Clara Valley. The California State Legislature designated this area as one of the last three remaining historical Japantowns in the United States alongside San Francisco's Japantown and Los Angeles's Little Tokyo. Commonly known as J Town, it is a historic cultural district of San Jose, north of Downtown.

Come visit the site of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (pictured below), which moved into a new building in 2010.

There are also two churches founded by the Japanese over 100 years ago, Wesley United Methodist Church and San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, which thrive on the same street, Fifth Street. They are home to many of the local community organizations, and host several of Japantown's largest cultural festivals.

This will be an amazing tour.  Don’t miss out.
