Join Cantor Shafritz for Jewish Music 101: Sounds, Settings, and Significance (from the Stories of Music Curriculum, a program of the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience). Together we will explore Jewish music in religious settings, see how different cultures helped produce different Jewish sounds, acknowledge the role of Western Art Music in American Jewish experience, and delve into the music of Jewish communal experience. This class will help us understand some important facets of Jewish music: how open, evolving, and diverse Jewish music truly is; how Jewish music reflects our people’s experience--historically, sociologically, and religiously; and how Jewish music helps us move forward as a people. Through all this we will begin to see how Jewish music can be one prism through which to understand and define our own Jewish experience.
