In the Beginning
Join Rabbi Magat and Docent Naturalist Nancy Weintraub for a special Shabbat in Nature as we begin a new year, a new month, and Parshat Bereshit ("in the beginning"). We will carpool to a permit parking area of Montebello Open Space (Waterwheel parking) and hike through a road-less traveled section of the preserve. We will discuss the natural and geologic history "in the beginning" as we take in the beautiful sweeping vistas from the Black Mountain Summit where we will have a brief ritual discussion and stop for a trailside snack. If weather permits expect to see spectacular views of the bay. Bring your own snack, comfortable hiking shoes, at least one liter of water per person, and something to sit on trailside (a small towel, plastic bag, or trail stool that you can carry several miles). We will traverse a gentle to moderate 4.5 mile loop on the ridge.
Since permit parking is limited, we will meet at Monta Vista Park lot (Voss Avenue in Cupertino). We can combine cars into carpools there at 9 am and caravan on the drive up to Waterwheel parking at the top of Montebello Road. If you would like to arrange carpools prior to then and meet at a more convenient location to minimize parking, please let Nancy Weintraub know and she can work with you to determine best carpool options.
