Temple Emanu-El’s ongoing Distinguished Speakers series, sponsored by its Brotherhood Auxiliary, invites nationally-recognized speakers from both liberal and conservative viewpoints to discuss topics that impact our diverse San Jose community. Planned Future Speakers:
  • February 10, 2009 - 8:00 PM - Temple Emanu-El is honored to have Dr. Vint Cerf, the co-creator of the Internet and a living legend in the Tech world, speaking on the past, present and future of the Internet. His talk will include details on the Interplanetary Internet he is designing for NASA to assist in the future of Space exploration.
  • This is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Cerf firsthand - he is vice president and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google, responsible for identifying new enabling technologies and applications on the Internet and other platforms for the company.
  • Widely known as the "Father of the Internet", Vint is the co-designer of the basic architecture of the Internet. In 1997, President Clinton recognized his work with the U.S. National Medal of Technology. In 2005, he received the highest civilian honor bestowed in the U.S. - the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

  • Osman Kent, a renowned entrepreneur in Silicon Valley who left it to pursue his dream of making music while satisfying his need for spiritual fulfillment through exploration of the Sufi philosophy. Osman is now the Founder of Songphonic Records in the UK and was recently elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in the UK. He is also a Barker for the Variety Club of Britain.
  • On August 29 and 30, 2008, Osman recited Rumi (Mevlana) poetry on stage at the renowned Edinburgh International Festival with the world-famous Istanbul Sena group of Whirling Dervishes from Turkey.  This performance was recorded and broadcast live by the BBC.
  • As part of the Distinguished Speaker Series, Mr. Kent will discuss his transition from high-tech exec to mystic and musician while providing the audience with a recitation of Sufi poetry, accompanying himself on Piano.

  • October 19, 2008 - National radio and TV host Dr. Larry Magid, talking about how to keep your children safe - both online and in the real world. Dr. Magid contributes to CBS News, the New York Times, U.S. News & World Report and other publications.
  • Dr. Magid is on the board of directors of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and is the recipient of that organization's ‘Ten Year Anniversary Award’ for his work in developing a system for finding missing children via online services.

  • February 23, 2008 - Mr. Curtis Sliwa, Guardian Angels founder and national Talk Radio host, in a roundtable discussion with local leadership from the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force.
  • A discussion how San Jose has taken a national leadership role in gang prevention activities and how the Guardian Angels may be able to offer additional support to their efforts, in cooperation with local law enforcement and City Hall. NBC Channel 11 featured the story on February 19.

  • January 13, 2008 - Dr. Seth Ammerman, Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, discussing the Mobile Clinic Program he created to national acclaim and has since become a model institution and program for at-risk youth.
  • The Mobile Clinic targets homeless and uninsured adolescents and young adults ages 12-24, providing free comprehensive primary health care services to these youth. A presentation and tour of the Mobile Clinic will follow.
  • December 8, 2007 - Rabbi Lennard Thal, Senior Vice President of the Union for Reform Judaism and its number 2 executive, makes his first visit to the Bay Area in 20 years with an exclusive visit to Temple Emanu-El.
  • He provides his analysis and thoughts about the future of Reform Judaism in the United States prior to the movement’s biennial in San Diego. A Talmud study class will also be taught by Rabbi Thal on December 9.
